Nel cuore del segno e della carta

As the title conveys, in the heart of the sign and of paper is an event dedicated to graphic design conceived as art, a technical visual alphabet in never-ending evolution. It is the occasion to explore the deep meaning of the “engrafted sign” today, in our contemporary time: not just as the technical trace on a mold, but as a gesture, thought and form of original expression.Through the stories and considerations gathered at the printmaking ateliers of Tecniche dell’Incisione – Grafica d’Arte at the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice, the talk will investigate the relationship between and the dialogic reading of several works by great artists preserved at the historical archive and the works created by the students, who are the protagonists of this year’s exhibition at Palinsesti. This is an opportunity to rediscover the tradition of printmaking in the Veneto region not as a practice belonging to the past, but as a contemporary tool, one that is able to address matter and time in an exchange of relations and expertise that is always alive and never to be taken for granted.

Diana Ferrara lives and works in Venice. An artist, painter and printmaker, she is also professor at the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice. A refined and multifaceted artist, she loves teaching and research. She is a printmaker in the classical meaning of the term, as she devotes her refined creativity to the practices of engraving with the burin and with etching. Ferrara boasts a multiform operosity, with a special attention on the material and immaterial heritage of ancient and modern graphics.

Elena Molena, engraving artist, is professor at the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice. Her engravings are preserved in public and private collections, such as the Istituto Centrale per la Grafica in Rome. For many years, her artistic research has focused on the metamorphosis of urban landscape with the exploration of and experimentation with matter, through the elected alphabet of the engraved sign.
